Basketball State Finals Dates Changed (1-11-08)

The Alabama High School Athletic Association has changed the dates of the 2008 State Finals Basketball Tournament due to a scheduling conflict with the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Complex.

The revised tournament schedule will begin Monday, Feb. 25, and conclude Friday, Feb. 29, at the BJCC. The original dates were Feb. 26-March 1.

“A scheduling conflict with the Civic Center has made it necessary for us to start the state tournament a day earlier than originally planned,” said Steve Savarese, Executive Director of the AHSAA. “It also means we will conclude the tournament a day earlier. It will not be necessary to make any changes in the Regional tournament schedule.”

The AHSAA’s popular final-four format state tourney has been played annually at the BJCC since 1994 in conjunction with the Alabama Basketball Foundation and Birmingham Tip-Off Club. This year’s tournament will begin with Classes 1A and 2A playing on Monday, Feb. 25, followed by Classes 3A and 4A on Tuesday, Class 5A on Wednesday and Class 6A on Thursday. Finals are set for the Wednesday and Thursday night sessions and both sessions on Friday.

Defending champions are: GIRLS: McIntosh (1A), Samson (2A), Sheffield (3A), Midfield (4A), Ramsay (5A; and Sparkman (6A). BOYS: J.F. Shields (1A), R.C. Hatch (2A), Madison Academy (3A), Madison County (4A), Williamson (5A) and LeFlore (6A).
