MOBILE — Top-ranked LeFlore had too much firepower for Spanish Fort to withstand in the boys 5A sub-regional contest on Friday night.
Demarcus Cousins scored 21 points — including seven dunks — grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked seven shots to lead the Rattlers to an 87-42 win over the visiting Toros.
"He was pretty special with it," LeFlore coach Otis Hughley said of Cousins. "These games are always hard. Last year they were very difficult. We just want guys to play the game the right way all of the time. I think we had some times where guys were playing together, sharing the basketball and being patient despite the tempo wasn't as fast. We showed some poise. There were a lot of good things we can take out of this game."
The Rattlers (28-2) will play in the South Regional in Troy on Tuesday, while the Toros closed out at 10-14 overall.
"That is a very good team," Spanish Fort coach Earnest Hill said. "They are great all the way around from guard, forward and center. They should win a state championship this year."
Gerald Watkins and Darryl Woods scored 14 points apiece and Marlon Ford eight for LeFlore, which connected on seven 3-pointers, while John Redman scored a game-high 24 points — including three treys — Alex Grant added seven points, Garrett Schumacher six and Nick Sexton three to lead Spanish Fort, which hit five treys.
The Rattlers built comfortable leads of 16-7 after one quarter and 38-13 by halftime. By the end of the third quarter the score was 61-20 and the Toros were too far behind to close the gap.
"Our game plan was to slow the game down and we slowed it down like we wanted to," Hill said. "We made some shots and missed some shots and turned the ball over a couple of times, but we made some adjustments and came back out the second half. We were just outmanned."
